"happened to be murdered"   Written by GregM (8/20/2004 12:36 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Henry the fourth, penned by Carolyn
Are you new?

Richard the 2nd was prevailed upon to resign the throne to Henry IV and retired to Pomfret Castle "where he happened to be murdered"... this cracks me up! "Happened to be murdered", as if he happened to meet some old friend, or happened to have a sandwich for lunch. Does JA have some opinion on how or why Richard II was murdered, or is she just dryly reporting on the demise of yet another boring monarch? Either way, Miss Austen was a funny one!
