Henry the fourth   Written by Carolyn (8/20/2004 7:58 a.m.)

Are you new?

Henry the 4th ascended the throne of England much to his own satisfaction in the year 1399

In 1398, Richard 3 banished Henry. John of Gaunt's death prompted Richard to confiscate the vast Lancastrian (Henry's) estates; Henry invaded England while Richard was on campaign in Ireland, usurping the throne from the king.

After having prevailed on his cousin & predecessor Richard the 2nd to resign it to him, & to retire for the rest of his Life to Pomfret Castle, where he happened to be murdered.

Pomfret Castle is actually Pontefract Castle in Yorkshire, now in ruins.
