I can't resist this bit of trivia. The names Rosencrantz and Guildenstern come from the ancestral tree of the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, whose writings on the structure of the cosmos were available in Shakespeare's time.
One article (see link) uses this fact to argue that a theme of `Hamlet' is a debate about the nature of the physical universe -- I find it intriguing if not altogether convincing.
Alternatively, perhaps Shakespeare just wanted some Danish names; nowadays he'd reach for the Elsinore telephone directory.
