GR: Claudius in the 21st c.   Written by Jezkalyn (5/28/2003 10:10 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Claudius and "performative utterance", penned by Laraine
Are you new?

] "Performative utterance" is just a way of saying that a person mananges to make something actually be so by saying it is so. The spoken words are the deed that have desired effect.

Very interesting, Laraine. This is the crux of what I was trying to get to but wasn't doing a very good job, um, communicating. ;-)

] He is an amazing communicator: the fact that he's selling dreams is not apparent to most people.

It occurs to me that he would have been a great used car salesman. For better or worse, being a good communicator is a positive trait - unfortunately the means are a bit skewed.
