in consequence of the missive, GR: Polonius and Gertrude??, penned by Cheryl
I've tried three times to answer this, and I keep getting into next week's territory! Sorry, Cheryl, some of this will have to wait. For now, I'd just say that I think Polonius, being a courtier, might just have wished that he'd been as fast a mover as Claudius- not in the murder, but in the marrying of Gert.
Marrying Gert (in a hurry, like Claud did) wouldn't have made him king- but it would have made him owner of a fairly substantial estate. It would also have made him stepfather of the heir apparent- Hamlet, and therefore an eminence gris, so to speak. So yes, there is a power motive.
And I really do think that Gert is probably an attractive woman. More next week.
