A most interesting what if! I wondered if Hamlet did hear part of what Claudius was praying, but he enters after the "juicy" confessional part. Do you suppose that when Claudius kneels, at that point he is praying some generic "soul purging" prayer (with no incriminating details). Hamlet apparently recognizes (overhears) that Claudius has accomplished the soul-purging part of the prayer and respects that fact. This part is confusing to me, because I am not sure what Hamlet "knows." If he "knew", would he let a little soul-purging get in his way? I suppose we have to take the word of the ghost, and the poisoning is later confirmed to the audience who gets to overhear Claudius. I sometimes wonder...what if the ghost lied (i.e., he's a jealous ghost)?
Ah, well, I've just confused even myself! If I think about it too deeply, I may go mad... ;-)
