Or, since he's so good at spying and eavesdropping, perhaps he was watching the garden and waiting to make sure the coast was clear and the king alone for Claudius to come and administer the poison? ;-)
] I'd bet he came to power with Claudius. I can't see that King Hamlet, as a straightforward active ruler would have been willing to put up with Polonius for very long at all.
This makes sense. Claudius and Polonius seem to have much more in common in the area of tactics at the very least.
