GR: Sophie has it right   Written by Katharine T (5/22/2003 11:01 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Sophie Thompson on Ophelia, etc., penned by Kristen G.
Are you new?

] Sophie Thompson on Ophelia:

] "She has a great deal of spirit - otherwise Hamlet would never had loved her - but her reactions to him are fuelled by fear and insecurity. Her conversation with Hamlet during the Players' scene is not made up of clever-clever wisecracks but is full of desperation. She has to be at a social occasion when her guts are spilling out - she is trying desperately to keep control by doing ordinary things while her world falls apart around her."

I like this analysis, especially of the play scene. I've always thought that although she doesn't say much, Ophelia must be tormented by this scene. Hamlet seems to be brutally jabbing at her with his lewd remarks, while Ophelia is desperately clinging to her calm.
