The speech she gives to her father after Hamlet has come to her makes me think that he knew he that the choice he had to make would sever him from her, and the promise of a bright, sunny future together -that business of taking her hand, touching her face, sighing greatly, and being unable to take his eyes from her as he left the room. Assuming he loved her deeply that must have been incredibly painful. Light and hope thrown over for well, that darkness of revenge and death.
