GR: Comic relief   Written by Cheryl (5/21/2003 2:12 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, By my standards, penned by Laraine
Are you new?

And fifthly, Ophelia's death provides us with some much needed comic relief:

HAMLET: What man dost thou dig it for?

First Gravedigger: For no man, sir.

HAMLET: What woman, then?

First Gravedigger: For none, neither.

HAMLET: Who is to be buried in't?

First Gravedigger: One that was a woman, sir; but, rest her soul, she's dead.

Sorry, was that incredibly insensitive? ;-) But I love how, when things are very intense and the audience is strung taut as a bow, Shakespeare throws in a scene like this to release some of the tension and give us a break to catch our breath before ending. The man knew how to handle an audience, didn't he?
