GR: How believable is Gertrude?   Written by Christine T. (5/19/2003 7:19 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Ophelia: Suicide or accident?, penned by Cheryl
Are you new?

] Of course, all this begs the question, why, if someone was cloase enough to her to be able to see Ophelia making garlands and falling into the brook, do they not pull her out of the water?!

] What do you all think? Accident or suicide?

This point alone makes me question Gertrude's account of Ophelia's death. I don't know if it could possibly have happened like that. Gertrude later says she wanted Ophelia to marry Hamlet, so she must have cared something about her. Given the taboo of suicide, might she have made up this whole story to soften the blow for Hamlet and the public?
