Kate Winslet and more   Written by Laraine (5/18/2003 10:55 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Ophelia and Marianne, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

It doesn't hurt that Kate Winslet played both Marianne and Ophelia, and when I see her in either role, I get echos of the other.

But even before Kate played Ophelia, I thought that Emma Thompson's rendering of Willoughby's and Marianne's love in the statement "I've always preferred wildflowers" spoke about the connection between the fragility of wildflowers when pulled out of their natural element, and the fragility of what those two felt about each other having grown in a natural environment where things like money and social responsibilities didn't matter much at all.

Marianne seems to want to feel what Ophelia felt--she wants that intensity of passion that might even make you lose your wits.
