GR: A violet in youth..etc......   Written by Deborah Julia (5/18/2003 4:02 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Ophelia, flowers and weeds, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

First, let me say hw pleased i am that we are all reading Hamlet together.

Secondly, may I say how thrilled I am at the "topics" for discussion.

At the risk of making a complete fool of myself, may I offer the following:

Laertes (1.3) :

"A violet in youth of primy nature;
Forward, not permanent; sweet not lasting
The perfume and suppliance of a minute,
No more".

The above suggests to me that Laertes is speaking from experience (or was it WS?)and (no new news to us readers) was trying to warn his little sister about the perils of "first love?"

I think Ophelia was being set up to marry Hamlet (poor girl).

This is my thoughts for what it is worth.
