I had to laugh at the comment on p.250 that "foreigners attributed the unattractive size of English women's feet to their prodigious taste for exercise [AKA: walking]. JA and some of her heroines certainly seem to fit this mould, don't they?
I remember reading that when the American Jennie Randolph-Churchill (mother of Winston) first came to visit her new husband's family in the 1870s, everybody laughed at her fragile little Paris shoes, and recommended that she buy some "beetle-crushers" that could stand up to a country walk ASAP!
