... that really bugs me about that time period! ;-) A woman might be honest, honourable, reliable as could be, but it all came down to her sexual reputation!

] -- A woman has a right to break the engagment, which several JA women do with no criticism of the actual breakage (Jane Fairfax, Anne Elliot). She is not obliged to keep her word in the way that he is.

It never occurred to me before that one reason women might have the option of breaking an engagement was because a woman just wasn't expected to be able to keep a promise the way a man did!
