Akin to a woman's chemise...   Written by LouisaP (11/10/2003 1:23 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Men's shirts, penned by Myretta
Are you new?

Which is, after all the same word in French for a man's shirt or a woman's undergarment!

Imagine a woman appearing in polite company clad only in her chemise - not at all the thing! I would venture to guess that a man clad only in his shirtsleeves would have felt as uncomfortable as if he were forced to appear only in his drawers!

Odd, isn't it, how a body can be completely covered in fabric, and yet be considered impolitely overexposed?
