Isn't our fair Republic somewhat like this? While some of us have had local meetings, and some of us travel distances to meet once a year, most of us have never met. Yet, I have written extensive e-mails giving advice offline; I have mailed videos of shows that I taped for people I never met (and usually said keep the tape because the postage is not worth the value of a blank tape); and I have received items as well. The reasons that many of us do not meet are the same today as they were in Georgian times -- it is expensive to travel; it is not convenient or easily arranged if you have children and family obligations; the weather can be an impediment, etc. The more I read this book, the more I see how little some things have changed. Our health, economic, and social options have improved (in most cultures), but so much is still the same -- running the household, women helping each other and sharing information, a keen eye towards shopping and acquisition for the household, an interest in fashion (or not), entertaining, making social connections and reciprocating invitations, etc. |
