] I loved the illustrations of current fashions in Elizabeth Shackleton's memorandum books, although I imagine that by the time she got around to seeing them, they were probably out of date.

Those hats totally cracked me up! Especially the one on the left side at the end of the picture made me wonder how the ladies safely crossed the streets when adorned with such headgear!
