Dictionary of Phrase and Fable ,it is a facetious (!)term for children in relation to their parents.And it all stems from Psalm 128

Thy wife shall be as a frutiful vine by the sides of thine house:thy children like olive plant around thy table.

Makes sense for JA to use it,doesn't it?
