When I responded to the comment about discordant marriages, I was thinking in terms of who was truly unhappy. Yes, Willoughby is shallow, and that is why he isn't as unhappy as some of the other couples mentioned. He makes the best of his situation with dogs and horses and a wife who is not always out of humor.

When I think of Maria Bertram Rushworth, I think of a woman who is truly unhappy in her situation, even though she is wealthy, fashionable and accepted in London society. While we would probably all agree that money doesn't buy happiness, we see how it can smooth some of the terrain on the road of life.
