being what it is,I doubt one can generalise very much about the relationships between master and servant.Each case would be entirerly different from another...as is mostly shown here,IMHO.

] It is also apparent to me that a good reference meant less than I thought it did, else why would so many people leave without giving proper notice?
Because in this area there was the prospect of alternative work in the textile industry.It was hard labour ,especailly when one consideres the dangrous machinery, but I darsay some preferred it to being a servant in an isolated farmhouse,with a clingnig mistress and a violent drunken master.
