Someone mentioned that The Gentleman's Daughter was a dissertation. Does anyone have any further information on this subject? Was the entire book Vickery's dissertation, or did she elaborate on the subject to make it a book worth publishing?

TGD reads very much like a school book -- the material is interesting but I find that my mind wanders quite a bit.
