GR:The Complete Servant by Samuel and Sarah Adams   Written by JulieW (10/26/2003 11:22 a.m.)
Are you new?

You may be interested to know that there has been a discussion about this book over on L+T today.

Which is timely,as I was going to mention it with regard to the group read.

It was published in 1825,written by two servants as a guide to employers and empolyees .It is fascinating in that it decribes in some detail the categories of servants, which ones households with varying incomes could expect to employ, the work the servants would be required to do, both indoors and out doors.

The makers of P+P2 also used it as a guide to staffing levels at Longbourn.

Here's a link to the book- recently re-issued in paperback. And if you do buy it you can help the Republic too ;-)
