GR: What to call your husband

I had to chuckle a little when I read on p. 67 that Bessy Ramsden often called her husband "Mr. R.", like Mrs. Elton's "Mr. E." in Emma. I wonder if her acquaintances considered her vulgar too, or just saw it as a sign of affection?
