GR: "Acceptable" trades   Written by Line (10/23/2003 8:19 p.m.)
Are you new?

I find the list of "gentlemanly" trades in GD very interesting: wholesale, which required a considerable financial investment, was acceptable, while retail was not. By this standard, Mr. Gardner in P&P should have been quite acceptable - ch. 25 talks about him living within view of his own warehouses, which implies that he was a wholesaler, not a retailer. However, P&P implies that he would not be acceptable to many people, including the Bingley sisters and Darcy (or so Elizabeth thinks at first). Again, is this because AV is talking about a somewhat lower social class than JA? Thanks for any insights you can give me!
