I wondered that, also, but I also noticed that the boys were sent off to become apprentices at a variety of posts, so maybe they were gone or were at a boarding school.

Also, there may have not been as close a family, as there may have been some animosity between the boys and the step-father, and the boys kept their distance out of fear.
