Actually, the next chapter says the average was 6 or 7 -- not too far off, but going through childbirth two more times back then definitely was significant! I won't say much more on the motherhood subject, because it's a big part of the next chapter, but you do bring up a very good point about wanting to minimize the dangers and stresses of pregnancy and motherhood. Can't wait until it's time to discuss it -- Chapter 3 is terribly interesting (and scary)!
