I think   Written by JulieW (10/21/2003 6:50 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, I am ever so fond of speculations, penned by Ann2
Are you new?

the publishers picked Wright of Derby as he never managed to break into the art world and markets of London or Bath sucessfully ,as did his contemporaries Gainsborough or Sir Joshua Reynolds.

He tried throughout his early profssional life to break into these markets but failed to really make his mark( or indeed much money.) ,and retired to Derby in 1777, and remained there.

He was therefore provincial, and was successful there(!) as were the ladies we are reading about.

I think it's a good choice.He was amazingly talented.,IMHO.

I have linked the really wonderful Wright gallery at the Derby Museum and Art gallery for your perusal.
