I am ever so fond of speculations   Written by Ann2 (10/21/2003 2:26 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: As promised, The Cover ;-), penned by Tori Marie
Are you new?

My friends might tell you, too fond by far... ;-)

...does that woman have a very dark foundation line between her chin and her neck? ;-) ...
] I've heard about women of that period using "paint", of course, ...But why on earth would a portrait painter include that detail to such a degree? ..., is it possible that this particular painting was chosen for this particular book with that mask-like feature in mind? Are we supposed to infer from this that Georgian women were wearing a mask of sorts; that they presented one face to the world which covered up their true one?

...

That's an interesting thought to be sure, but...What I see is rather a woman who is struggling to present a composed face to the world. I can't help but feel that the shade of her nose indicates tears - being recently shed or else barely supressed.
[I am not sure , but wasn't the paint that might drip of her ladyship's face in front of a good blaze rather some lead concoction to whiten the face? You know, the opposite of brown and coarse ;-9]

This skillful, but merciless artist seems to be one very interested in reality. He's the one with the amazing Experiment on bird in an air pump (or something like that) picture.[ Stunning online presentation:http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/cgi-bin/WebObjects.dll/CollectionPublisher.woa/wa/work?workNumber=NG725 ]
Apart from the beautiful light in that one there is one man in particular whose face is painted as blemish as it probably was.
One more thing... I found another portrait of a woman, most selfassured but doesn't her dress and hairdo look similar to Mrs Swindell's?
I give you :

'Mrs Frances Hesketh'
