] Knowing just how serious a step it was to offer the girl a way out of the engagment, places Sir Thomas in a rather kinder light. He was aware of the effects of such a break but he still made the offer.

It also places JA in a rather courageous light, IMO, for she herself broke off an engagement. She was aware of the effects but still followed her heart. This was perhaps something that wouldn't have been admired in her time, but this modern woman personally finds it very courageous. :-)

I suppose it wasn't as big a deal because she broke it off only the next day, and word likely wouldn't have gotten out by then. But I wonder if word *did* get out, and if it had any bearing on the fact that she never received any other offers?
