I feel the deepest sympathy for Elizabeth Shackleton, who suffered with her second choice for a husband.

But I was struck how much we do have in common with our ancestors. Too often we have such a two-dimensional view of life long ago, thinking that women were all the same. Obviously, this book shows that life was not as repressed or quiet as we often think,
