GR: "And what is fifty miles of good road?"   Written by Laraine (10/20/2003 1:25 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Confined and unvarying?? (Ch. 1), penned by Barbara
Are you new?

I agree with what you've said, and I was reminded that Elizabeth thinks the 50 miles is a great distance, and Darcy thinks it is and easy distance.

How far it was definitely was influenced by how much money one had to invest in excellent horses and excellent carriages, and in how good the roads were.

Isn't a turnpike a toll road? I thought the term came from the barrier put in the road to make you pay the toll. I could have made this up, though. I have no idea where or when the notion entered my head.
