to the synonyms, and John Dryden and Samuel Johnson to the list of writers. I'd also add that "rationalism" was the big idea.

Austen is usually said to me more an Augustan than a Romantic, although I think that's an oversimplification of her and the two movements. There's no doubt that she admired Samuel Johnson a good deal. But she also liked Byron and Scott, who are extremely Romantic.
