When I read the sentence: "Engagements which collapsed at the settlement stage tainted a woman's reputation..." I thought immediately of Maria Bertram, whose engagement to Mr. Rushworth was in the tricky settlement stage when her feelings fixed on Henry Crawford. Not too long ago I wondered what this sentence from MP meant (it's from the same chapter to which Julie's post refers): Henry Crawford had destroyed her happiness, but he should not know that he had done it; he should not destroy her credit, her appearance, her prosperity, too.
Now I get it...
