Robert Parkers persistant courtship of her rather flouted the rules on corresponding before marriage.She joined in and got away with it then ,as she eventually wore her father down and managed to keep Robert's interest alive.

After his death,she was ,in Vickery's words" a rather merry widow "and I suppose her "luck"as gamesteres would have it,simply ran out when she eloped to Gretna with her love, Shackelton.

But it only disitnegrated between them (as evidenced by her diaries and letters ) after a few years.Perhaps the social ostracism by her borthee put terrible pressures on the marital relationship.I am sure it would,peronally.
