the reason that she was held to be the innocent party in her divorce. Also, at least among the Forsytes, she provided excitement and gossip that they may not have been exposed to otherwise, especially in the more restricted world of Aunts Ann, Juley, and Hester. Regarding Soames and Irene, Soames would never do anything to give Irene cause to divorce him. If she wanted to be free of him, she would have to do something to give grounds for a divorce. And then of course, as you said, she would be the one who was not accepted by polite society.
