I find Francie such an interesting character. At the time of the dance, I believe she is 28-29 years old, has earned her own money, is a master at working social networks, etc. I'm wondering if she will be one of the next generation of Forsyte "leaders", since she seems more self-sufficient than some of the men. It's hard to imagine she needs a dance to show herself to eligible men (wouldn't she be weary of these things by now), but I can picture her stepping into a role of putting on these events for the younger Forsytes.
As to feeling sorry for Soames, he's been reminded of his "oath" that "if their marriage were not a success, she should be as free as if she had never married him!" He's seeing some evidence of what Irene might mean right before his eyes. Why these people never talk about such important things is beyond me!
I do feel sorry for June. Bosinney has not treated her well in this matter. He could have let her down more gently. Engagements sometimes didn't work out, but there are better ways to go about it. I don't know why Irene doesn't take June's feelings more into account. There's a lot I don't know!
