This one, in Part II, Chapter 10, particularly struck me as very evocative of a type and very vivid in image:

"He was one of those men who, seated cross-legged like miniature Chinese idols in the gates of their own hearts, are ever smiling at themselves a doubting smile."

This description haunted me for some time after I finished the chapter. Of course, this could be because I'd just watched Men in Black.
