I don't think he's being unkind to June deliberately or even carelessly--I think he's forgotten she exists. (Not that this is a GOOD thing, mind!) He lives the artist's/visionary's life, above and beyond social norms, and now that his affections are, as you say, otherwise engaged, he's completely wrapped up in that new object.
