We see more of Montie in this week's chapters. So far, I think he's the biggest cad of them all -- womanizer, gambler, drinker. One doesn't know what he does for a living, if anything. He seems to be an idle 'gentleman' who lives off his father-in-law.
So who is worse off, Winifred who is married to a man with no redeeming qualities? We haven't seen that she is unhappy with him yet, although that may come. (It seems inevitable, or is she just happily blind to it?) Or Irene, whose husband is virtuous in comparison, but for whom she has no love.
