What do you suppose Soames was collecting up there in his picture room?

Here are some 19th Century English Painters

I imagine that what he had in his picture room was not the sentimental Victorian paintings, but something more modern. Something he thought worth something, but didn't want to display (or possibly share).

Did he just collect English painters though? Maybe he had some Whistler's up there: Whistler
