I'm sure you're right, Laurie, that James was exerting some not-so-subtle Victorian pressure re: children. (Not that modern parents don't agitate for grandchildren, of course!) James is a decent sort and probaby thought a child would give Irene a focus for her energies and all that. Putting myself in her place, I wonder if her stiffening is an expression of her feelings about what a child would mean in terms of an additional tie to Soames...and what it would cost her to get the child. Unhappy thought indeed :-(
