I feel really sorry for Soames. I think he has built up all these defenses and he is so screwed up about having a veneer of control over everything, but he can't make Irene love him no matter what. I am irritated with Irene. Can't she humor him? Can't she see his faults but put up with him anyway? I think he genuinely cares for her, but doesn't have a clue as to how to properly express it. She seems more aware of these subtle things. Can't she teach him? Instead she is cold and disconnected. I guess she is depressed but she did agree to marry him. He isn't that horrible is he? Or maybe I am just the shallow, materialistic type??? LOL
