I feel sorry for Soames in some ways, but at the same time, I see the point about his selfishness. I get the sense that he doesn't even begin to know how to relate to Irene. He wanted her for all the wrong reasons...as another work of art to decorate his home almost and maybe thought that marrying her would make her automatically love him and be open with him. I feel sorry for him for being so clueless, yet at the same time find him disgusting for seeing her almost as a posession.

I didn't see the moment with the kitten as much as jealousy because he wants to posess her as it was jealousy that she doesn't treat him with any tenderness.
