understand. He cannot understand his wife's behaviour. To me he is a selfish man. He loves his possessions and Irene is one of them. It does not occur to him to be open with Irene and discuss her feelings. (Maybe he's right.) To give him his due, he is besotted by Irene and would give her anything she wanted except freedom from him.

My problem with Irene is why did she marry a man like Soames. Without going too far into the story, it appears that Soames is the last man on earth she should have married.
