The Club   Written by LaurieC (9/19/2004 9:38 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Defining social climbing, penned by Golda
Are you new?

I think the Club episode is what put me in mind of the Forsytes trying to climb higher at one time. Old Jolyon had been rejected from joining the "Hotch Potch" owing to his being "in trade." I can't imagine that he didn't know he was taking a chance by trying to climb just a little bit up the ladder. Maybe this is the sort of thing that made them settle in and remain comfortable at their own social class level. Just musing. This book is giving me lots to think about. Thanks, Golda!

:-)
