The mysterious "they"   Written by LaurieC (9/19/2004 7:38 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Rumors about Irene, penned by Kristen G.
Are you new?

LOL, it's good to have multiple options, Kristen! :-)

"for they said---they said---she had been asking for a separate room..." Aunt Ann doesn't reveal who says this, so it is a mystery. A few pages later, I think Aunt Ann is pressing Soames for confirmation:

"And how is dear Irene?"

Soames's smile died.

"Pretty well," he said. "Complains she can't sleep..."

I wonder if this exchange means that Soames knows Aunt Ann has heard the rumors, and he is giving some explanation in Forsyte-code which explains what is going on (without revealing too much of the sad truth). It's hard to know how much to read between the lines, but we know there are marital troubles. So, I don't know who the source might be, but it's interesting to see how it becomes revealed to the other family members.
