On reflection I believe you are all right. In this case a tacit apology is preferable to an explicit one. The clincher for me is Nan's argument that an outright apology would have reminded Miss Bates that she was considered tedious, in effect rubbing salt into the wound whilst attempting to heal it. Thank you all for your input.
