Gypsies and hawking   Written by Elbč (5/3/2008 4:05 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Agree---here's another, penned by BarbaraB
Are you new?

Good catch! It made me think of further grounds that connect the name 'Hawkins' with Mrs Elton's hawk-nature - If I remember correctly - I think a post here also spoke of gypsies and hawking - selling goods on streets etc. Well, I find it interesting then that it is also Mrs Elton who suggest that they should be like a gypsy party at the Donwell strawberry-picking outing. And the description you wrote of how Mrs Elton swoops down on Jane like a hawk, made me think of the gypsies 'attack' on Harriet.

And hawking points to trade - another allusion to the fact that Mrs Elton's family fortune comes from the slave trade?
