The People of Highbury   Written by Antoinette (5/2/2008 5:29 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Spiteful, penned by Rachel G
Are you new?

If the folks in Highbury scorn Emma for being a snob, then the H in Highbury stands for hypocrite. Mr. Elton could say Emma is a snob for thinking him beneath her, all the while sneering at Miss Smith as a nothing. The Coles could feel offended that Emma initially thinks them not worth dining with; all the while they divide up the Cox family as the worthy and unworthy parts. As I say elsewhere Mr. Knightley is as snobbish about Harriet's illegitimacy as Mr. Elton. Mr. Woodhouse is all upset about the fact that John and Isabella take their children to a less fashionable seaside resort. I could go on like this forever.

The folks in Highbury dare not throw the snob stone at Emma because they all live in glass houses.
